Vega One and The Porcelain Goddess

Holy shit peeps.  I have spent all day violently ill, and while I don't want to get too TMI with you, I do want to warn you about a bad product that could potentially make you sick.

So the day started off really well.  I had yoga scheduled this morning, and decided to have a smoothie for breakfast before I went.  This is hard to write about, because it just reminds me of the experience all over again but...I made a peach smoothie with this protein powder from the Vega One brand.  When I first started PINK last year, I occasionally used this brand and had no issue with it, then I bought a new tub in the fall after they apparently changed their formula.  The new formula made me pretty sick, throwing up and the works, so I stopped using it.

Last week when I was out shopping, I thought I would give Vega One another chance, thinking maybe that I got a bad tub of it.  This time I just bought a couple of individual packets in case I didn't like it, instead of spending money on a tub of it.

So the shake didn't taste very good to me, but I was hungry and choked it down so that I wouldn't be hungry during yoga.  I was sort of ok in class, though I felt really tired, and the room was flaming hot.  I got home and was sitting on the couch watching the Ravens/Colts game and just felt AWFUL.  My stomach was roiling, I felt hot and cold all at once.  It finally got to the point where I was like, I"m going to make myself throw up because I'd rather throw up than be dancing on the edge of throwing up, so I did.  5 minutes later I didn't have to make myself, I barely made it to the bathroom before I was heaving my guts up again.  For the next 4-5 hours I was in misery from both ends, and threw up every 30 minutes or so.  I can't even remember the last time I was that sick.

I finally was able to eat something around 3 pm, but God I feel awful.  My ribs, back, stomach and throat ache so bad.  I went online to see if this was a freak thing, or if other people had experienced issues with the Vega One powder.  Sure enough, there was story after story about people violently throwing up and having explosive diarrhea after making shakes with this powder.  Sounds like the company is not very responsive to complaints about it, but I guess it could be one of a few things.  An allergy to one of the types of algae they use (apparently 30% of the population has this allergy), Vitamin A poisoning, or an allergy to savi seed, which is one of the proteins they use.  Regardless, screw this product.  I would highly recommend NOT using it.  There are tons of complaints about this product out there, so I welcome you to do your own research.

My sad pathetic meal plan for today....please don't judge:

Breakfast:  Does it count if you threw it up?
Lunch:  Cup of wonton soup, a half cup of rice, tablespoon of butter, cup of orange chicken
Dinner:  Cup of rice,  tablespoon of butter, 3 TB of chocolate chips.

  1. I too have had this reaction. It is crazy! I even went through a tub of the stuff earlier in the year with no issue but twice in the last two weeks I have had it happen. Ugh!

  2. It was bad milk, they were using facilities contaminated with it throughout early 2013:

  3. I had this reaction recently (winter & spring 2014). Like you I thought I bought a bad batch & repurchased. Nope. Violent vomiting, dizzy, shaking, cold sweats, etc. both times for 2 days. I think it's the saviseed, it's the only new ingredient to me - now I avoid it at all costs. :(

  4. I had the same reaction to the Vega Sport Protein ecovery shake (chocolat). I had the fisrt tub (822G)30 days before with no issues. Then came the second tub (from a different source then number 1) and from the first shake i starting vomiting 1 hour later. I treid a second shake a few days later thinking it was something i ate and again 1 hour later the same reaction and again on shake 3 and 4. So no ore for me cause the reaction became significally more violent during shake 4. I contacted Vega and even if i did not buy the product from them they took it back for analysis and they offered to give me my money back but a asked for Vega sport recovery bars which i have no issues with and they do contain the Savi Seed oïl (the shake contain the Savi Seed). Will it take longer for my body to react to the bars cause of oïl instead of the seed, we will see... From Montréal Canada

  5. Thank you for your posting and informing people about this issue...I bought a packet of this stuff yesterday and was going to try it, but not now! I hope people called the company and held them responsible for this...this is pretty serious stuff. Makes me wonder what's going on there from a QC perspective.

    1. It still amazes me that by far the number one search term that gets my blog hits are searches about Vega One. I warn everyone I can about it, although apparently some people handle it just fine judging by the reviews on Amazon, or else they'd be off the market. I use a hemp protein powder now that has very few ingredients (Manitoba Harvest) and has always set well with my stomach. I'd return that packet you got and get something else.

    2. Thank you for posting this information. I had a terrible reaction to this product as well. It makes me wonder if the company is somehow erasing bad reviews, etc -- hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but there is a lot of information out there about these side effects and yet little mention of it on the reviews, which seems odd to me. Again, I appreciate your posting about this. It is an important public service.

  7. I had a severe allergic reaction to Vega One Protein powder :'( It was so bad... I was barfing for 4 hours last night and was balled up in fetal position on my bed shaking while my fiance and mom took care of me. It was horrible. Never drinking this stuff again. This is also the 2nd time this has happened with Vega One... I had thrown out the first tub I bought (The all-in-one vanilla flavor) because it made me violently ill but got the Sport Recovery protein powder (chocolate flavor) as a gift from my brother this past Christmas so I gave it one last try but that also made me sick. Ugh. I was still sort of shaking this morning.... The company is giving me my money back though which is good! The lady from the company said I was probably allergic to the savi seed protein in the ingredients :/

  8. Very interesting article and good advice. I give it a try. For those who are not sure in the vega one efficiency http://weightlosstop.com/vega_one_nutritional_shake.php read some about it.

  9. I had the same reaction last year. I am actually shocked that they are still selling this stuff! I felt like I should go to the hospital it was so bad.

  10. I also had this reaction to Vega. The Vega I drank had spirulina in it. I was ill for hours. I also had this reaction to consuming chlorella, which is the same blue green algae as spirulina that the author mentioned. We are probably all allergic to blue green algae!

  11. I bought a tub yesterday from whole foods and I tried a teaspoon in a glass of water. I was worried about all the bad internet reviews on this product. Luckily nothing has happened to me but I don't think I'll be having any more. I have a feeling my body is not going to agree with large doses of the powder. It also has a very strong, sweet taste of stevia that I do not like.

  12. I'm having this bad reaction right now. I'm pissed that I spent nearly 40 bucks on a huge tub of it!

  16. Thank you for this post! 9 months ago I made myself a smoothie with vega one in it and I began throwing up numerous times. I was pregnant at the time so I thought I had a bug or it was the pregnancy. I haven't had it since for some reason and today I made myself a smoothie with it - 2 hours later I became violently ill. I was vomiting for 2 hours laying on my bathroom floor just sweating and vomiting. Thank God my mother had my baby today because I was so sick I wouldn't have been able to take care of her. The fact this has happened to many others is disturbing.

  20. This just happened to me last night. Used the chocolate Vega one powder and within an hour or so was vomiting every few minutes. I couldn't keep water or gravol down. I'd be hot one second and shivering the next. This lasted about 3-4 hours until I had to go to the emergency room where I received anti-nausea medication by IV. Thank you for this post, otherwise I would have been left wondering what had happened to me!

  21. I bought this product yesterday and have spent most the night and morning experiencing the same issues. I will be filling a complaint with the cdc. Here's the link https://search.cdc.gov/search?query=complaint+form&utf8=✓&affiliate=cdc-main
I recommend anyone with this reaction to do the same.

  25. I looked this up because....exactly what I have been going through!!!
My sister gave me 2 containers, vega one chi, vega one mocha...
It's been a week, I have been drinking the chi one last week and weekend...this week up to today!!! Last night was horrible, all weekend and yesterday....sick,sick,sick!!! Sweating, freezing at the same time, weekness, feel week, just a messed! I got scared last night because I have other conditions and the way I have been feeling seems to be making it worse! I'm used to protein powder, but after reading this helps me to feel that Vega One....is definitely not for me!
I hope so much that this feeling goes away!!!
If you are menopausal....the hot and cold sweating, whew....bad,bad,bad!!!

  26. Thanks as well for this. I used Vega Sport (Black container, blue label) without issue for probably about 2 years - daily and after workouts - loved it. Also the Sport protein bars when out and about.

Then started just feeling yucky after having them, and reluctantly stopped using them - this, over 2 years ago.

THEN just in the last 3 months, tried the Chlorella. Again, about 10-15 times with no problem, and then whammo. Same as above. Kicked in just after a lunch of leftover Salmon Chowder so thought THAT was the culprit but laid off the Chlorella and all other supplements while recovering. Nope. Took it again today for the first time since and AGAIN - BAD SICK.

Is interesting to me that there's something that seems to build up before it kicks in. Also wondering if maybe the formula in the Sport was changed about that time but I didn't look into it as I never got THAT sick, just felt unwell..

Thanks all for posting - thought it was just me.

  27. I haven't puked - thank goodness - but have realized that vega seems to be the cause of the gnarly headaches I've had for the past 3 days. Any suggestions for a plant-based alternative?

  28. 3 years ago it started. Flu symptoms straight away after a vega one shake. Weeks later I have another shake out of the same batch. I thought I just had the flu. Second time violently ill within hours. I took that tub back and chalked it up to a bad batch.
2 years later in a hurry at a friends took a half of scoop of vega one within 2 hours I again was violently vomiting and...well who wants to know. I researched it and felt it must be savi seed allergy. I have avoided products with savi seed since. Today sick as a dog...took another product sachi incas???...same thing as savi seed. I am sure thats the issue now. I feel like a glutton for punishment. I think this seed needs to be removed completely from all products due to the violent reaction constantly reported. To the 2 guys who found this in Peru...wtf???

  29. My brother suggested Vega One, so I began using it. I started making smoothies in the morning with it, and for the first few days I was fine but more recently, I have been sick to my stomach! I thought maybe it was the fact that I was using Soy Milk when I never drink the stuff - so I changed to my normal Coconut Milk, but have been super ill the past 2 days with no sign of recovery. I haven't had Vega all day but still remain super sick. I hate this! I am very sensitive when it comes to protein powder, I am also lactose intolerant. I thought this would be the right choice. I guess it works well fro my brother but not me!

  30. Been using all of Vega One products for 3-4 years. My issue was with the Vanilla Protein and Greens. All of a sudden, I got all the symptoms noted above (to say the least - with a bit of fever). I have one tub at work and one at home. Both tubs were bough via Amazon (as with the their other products). When I took the one at home, I got sick (as in REALLY sick). When I took the one at work, I was fine. Having said that, I know something changed - formula? ingredients? I contacted Vega One regarding this matter and I was asked to send the tub their Vancouver office. 3 weeks later, I was told that "after investigation, we have determined that all the results were within our specifications." I asked for a replacement and they were kind enough to oblige. I am posting my experience because I thought I was the only one with this problem. It turns out, this is not the case. And with 2 tubs to compare, something definitely is different.

  31. Thank you all for your posts - sorry you all had this terrible experience. I, too, became violently ill from Vega One (Vanilla) Two weeks ago, I had my first Vega 1 shake. Several hours later, I vomited but since I also had body aches & a terrible headache, I assumed I had a GI bug, took 1/2 a Zofran & went to bed. A week went by and then last Sunday, I decided to have my second Vega 1 shake. An hour later, I was cleaning my bathroom when I became violently ill. I could not stop vomiting, became severely diaphoretic, lightheaded & had a sense of impending doom. I'm not kidding when I say that I literally thought I was going to die right there on my dirty bathroom floor. My husband managed to get me to the ED where I was hypothermic & hypotensive but after some IV fluid & phenergan, I felt much better & after five hours, was sent home. During this unpleasant episode, my husband googled "Vega 1 and vomiting" and was shocked to discover, primarily through this blog, that many others had also become violently ill from this stuff. Apparently, many folks love this product and have no problems with it but unfortunately, it can also cause a segment of the population to become violently ill. Thanks again to you all for sharing your stories and to this blog's owner for allowing her blog to be a forum for this issue, because I'm not sure I would have made the connection without your help. And who knows how many additional tests I would have had run on me had my husband not found this information. I'm completely dreading the hospital bill already!

  33. Oh my god! This is the first time I've been able to find other people that got sick from Vega!! Everything people are writing is exactly what happened to me! Cold sweats, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, crawled up in the fetal position praying for it to go away..awful. And I also was fine with it before I experienced a reaction..so weird. Bought a chocolate protein powder product from them, had it a couple times, let it sit for whatever reason for a couple weeks. I believe then I had some again and experienced hell. This was in '13 or '14 I believe. Checked ingredients and the only thing I'm unfamiliar with is the savi seed. Thank you everyone for sharing and if anyone files anything against Vega for this I'm on board. Don't want to cause trouble to them, just want it fixed. I'm literally getting sick to my stomach recalling what I went through.

    2. As I stated below I feel there's nothing wrong with the product. A small percentage of individuals will react to Stevia, artificial flavorings. Perhaps one of those is you. Nobody's going to be filing any claims against Vega. Because there's nothing wrong with the product I suggest you invesigate other areas of your health perhaps there something else because it's not Vega

  34. Ok I used it for years
This time I drank it and today I was sick all day still am. Pain in my gut and so nauseous I couldn't even be a good mom
    And I'm a clean eater
Consumed no meat dairy or processed food today and drank the vega one and the sport vega after my workout
I literally feel like I'm going to die
I forced myself to vomit tonight took gravel still no relief

  35. Had the same reaction- nausea, colicky type pain, diarrhea. Had to go to ED due to pain and got a full evaluation of my gallbladder. No stones, infection or function issues but wow, the pain was "curled up in a ball, rocking back and forth" kind of horrible.

  36. I don't know what is wrong with you people, but I've been drinking this for months and it actually makes me feel great. I have lupus and a very limited diet no wheat no dairy no sugar etc. I have a very sensitive immune system very sensitive got. If this were a bad product I would not be able to handle it. Don't go around calling something a bad product because small percentage of people don't react well to it. Some people can't eat avocado does that make avocados bad? Assume therefore; it's not the product but your reaction to it. It's not for everyone.

    1. Rachel, I'm not sure why you're offended that some people have had reactions to this product. I've used it twice, and both times resulted in pretty violent reactions for me. Clearly it has done the same for other people. The end result is that I now know there is something in the product that doesn't agree with me, ergo I don't use it anymore. I mean, I didn't bring a lawsuit against Vega or picket outside their headquarters. I just simply stopped using it, which affects no one really. I blogged (in 2013 mind you) about the experience and clearly that resonated with people. If it's not your experience with it, that's great because it's not like I WANT people to be sick. I have a friend who uses Vega just fine with no reactions and it never occurred to me to be bothered by that, or for her to scold me for not using it. It would be like me scolding someone with a shellfish allergy just because I eat shrimp without an issue. Again, this happened in 2013, so I'm long over it.

  37. I also want to add that if you're concerned about your health it's foolish to buy something in "chocolate Allmond flavor" or "vanilla chai". It's fuel...Not dessert. if anything these people are reacting to the artificial flavourings. There is a "natural" version with no flavouring or stevia. adults should know better

  38. I am absolutely in love with this product. And raw meal. I worship them. I was taking raw meal regularly and stopped because of gut wrenching pain. Sudden gut wrenching pain and stopped all protein drinks for several months. They reformulated their product too. Now Vega One I got brave and bought a few packets and was excited because my stomach felt great. In the last couple days it's been kicking my butt and clenching my gut up like a mother €_¢!<€π. Sucks.
